Complete Guide to Shanghai Museum Exhibitions and 2026 Schedule

Shanghai is currently buzzing with cultural excitement as the Shanghai Museum (SHM) unveils its massive exhibition schedule for 2026. Whether you are a local art lover or a traveler planning a trip to the 'Pearl of the Orient,' the museum’s dual-venue strategy—spanning the classic People’s Square Gallery and the ultra-modern East Hall—promises an incredible year of global and domestic treasures.

A Year of Global Civilizations

Following the record-breaking success of the Ancient Egypt exhibition, the museum is preparing another blockbuster: "Top of the World Tree: Ancient American Civilizations." This massive showcase will feature over 1,000 artifacts from Mexico, Peru, and Honduras, covering the Maya, Aztec, and Inca empires.

For those interested in the fusion of history and technology, the East Hall is already winning hearts with its immersive VR experiences. The "Fengshen Prequel VR" and upcoming Andean explorations allow visitors to 'walk' through ancient ruins, making history accessible for all ages.

Celebrating the Year of the Horse

In Chinese culture, the Lunar New Year is marked by a special zodiac exhibition. For 2026, the "Spring Breeze and Galloping Horses" exhibition will showcase 16 world-class artifacts, including Han Dynasty bronze horses and masterpieces by renowned painters like Xu Beihong and Zhang Dajun. It’s a perfect way to experience the symbolic power and elegance of the horse in Chinese history.

International Collaborations

Shanghai's global connections are on full display with two major partnerships. The British National Portrait Gallery will bring "From Shakespeare to J.K. Rowling" to the East Hall, marking its first major appearance in mainland China. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is collaborating on a cross-cultural jewelry exhibition, "Sparkling Universe," contrasting ancient Egyptian and European adornments with Chinese imperial treasures.
